Attendance
If you are absent you must contact us immediately with the reason for this absence. You can get in touch by telephone on (0191) 383 0708 or by email absence@dgsc.org.uk.
On return to college you must complete an illness form, stating the reason for absence and return to the Attendance Officer.
If this absence is more than 5 days in length the illness form must also be accompanied by a parental note.
We do not want our students to fall behind with their studies therefore we expect you to speak to your teachers on return to college and make every effort to catch up on any missed work.
As I am sure you will appreciate good attendance at the Sixth Form Centre is vitally important. Our courses are demanding and absence will inevitably lead to you missing vital work and perhaps falling behind with your studies. If your attendance becomes a cause for concern we will have to contact your parents and formally monitor your progress.
In the most serious of cases this could lead to you being asked to leave the Sixth Form Centre.
However, if there are genuine issues that are stopping you from attending college, help is at hand. Just contact your Pastoral Leader of Learning for advice and support.
Please note...
Should you wish time off college for a holiday, funeral, university open day and the like, an appropriate Holiday or Leave of Absence form must be completed and permission sought from your Pastoral Leader of Learning.
Careers, Information, Advice & Guidance
We offer a comprehensive higher education and careers programme alongside personalised support to aid you with all careers decisions including the UCAS application and alternative routes.
Students can access a range of careers resources on the Durham Learning Gateway. (Students not familiar with their user names or passwords should contact the Resource Centre.)
Financial Support - Student Finance Arrangements 2011/12
If you are a student moving from Year 11 to Year 12
The EMA scheme no longer exists due to government funding cuts. However, this has been replaced by bursary awards. Bursary awards may be paid to students facing financial barriers to participation, such as the costs of transport, meals, books and equipment. The full criteria for eligibility has not been agreed at this stage. Watch this space for further details.
If you are a student moving from Year 12 to Year 13
Students who received £30 per week EMA in Year 12 will now receive £20 per week in Year 13. Unfortunately students who received £20 & £10 per week will no longer be eligible for EMA payments due to government funding cuts.
Student Welfare
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our learners and our commitment to this is detailed in our Safeguarding Policy and related procedures which can be found here.
Alternatively, should you require advice on any serious personal issue you must contact your Pastoral Leader of Learning or our Safeguarding Officer, Mrs J.Normanton.
