Visit of a former Politics Student

29th June 2009

Former Durham Sixth Form Centre student Becky Brunskill returned to the centre in April to give a talk on ‘Being a County Councillor’ to Government & Politics students. Becky was a former Politics student at the centre from 2004-2006, and is currently studying a BA in Politics at Northumbria University.

In the May 2008 County Council elections, she ran a successful election campaign and was elected by a comfortable margin to represent Willington ward. She has since been an active member of the county council and is involved in the areas of Adult Health, Local Environment and Community Youth Provision.

During her talk she displayed great enthusiasm for her role on the council. She also described the great pleasure it gives her when the projects she launches are successfully completed and make a visible difference to the lives of people in her local community.

She expressed the belief that if young people want to feel as though they are making a difference, and want to gain a sense of satisfaction from helping others, then the role of county councillor is a perfect opportunity to achieve these ambitions.

We wish Becky all the best in the future with her Politics degree and in her role as a county councillor.
