The Inaugural Launch of the Interact Club at the Sixth Form Centre.
1st July 2010
The Durham Sixth Form interact club is a new body which had its inaugural ceremony at the Riverdale Business Centre in May 2010. The Interact Club, founded by 24 A Level Economics students, is a self-governing and self-supporting body, which is run and organised by its student committee members. It is to become part of the student enrichment programme at the Sixth Form Centre when the wider student community will have the opportunity to become members.
The Interact Club is part of Rotary International, a global network dedicated to community and international service.
Its board of directors comprises of an elected President Grant Hollis, Vice President Cameron Neck, Treasurer Thomas Howard, Vice Treasurer Jack Fulton, Secretary Jenny Pigg and Vice Secretary Stacey Killen. Other elected Board members include Paul Harvey, Stephen Cullen, Richard Kilgour and Andrew George.
Although the Interact Club is independent it will work in partnership with the Durham and regional Rotary Club as well with other community and business organisations.
The club members will meet at least twice a month to plan and co-ordinate various fund raising activities. Each interact club aims to carry out at least one local community service project, and one international project per year which promote understanding and goodwill.
Mike Costello, from the Rotary Club, said: "The forming of a new Interact Club is regarded with great pride and affection within Rotary. It marks the creation of a partnership with staff and students which will give the new Interactors the opportunity to help their school, community and wider world whilst developing a range of personal qualities and practical skills.”
He added, "For them to found a club with 24 members in a relatively short time was impressive, as were their immediate efforts to set in place a structure for their successors, raise funds and begin the process of identifying worthwhile projects for them to undertake."
Mr Eddy Nicholson, Chairman, Vocational Sub-Committee, Rotary Club of Durham, said “It has been a delight and privilege to be involved in the creation of this club as the enthusiasm, commitment and energy of the founding members has been a joy to behold. The help and support of the school has been invaluable but it is the efforts of the students themselves which have resulted in the creation of the club and will guarantee its success.”
The interact club provides our students with a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills while helping others improve their community as well as making a difference in the world.
The Mayor of Durham, Councillor Mamie Simmons said, “The students were very enthusiastic and keen to move the club forward.”
