learning mentoring...
KS4 mentoring began in November 2004 when I was appointed to the post of Learning Mentor to our Year 11 students.
This has been extended to include all of KS4 and my task is to assist students to achieve the best grades possible in their GCSEs through collaboration with teaching staff and students.
This is in addition to the informal mentoring that takes place through form tutors and teaching staff.
What are Learning Mentors?
- Role Models to their mentees
- Active Listeners
- Observers of young people in their various contexts
- Advocates and supporters of young people
- Encouragers
- Professional friends
- Challenger of assumptions young people may have about themselves and their aspirations
Key Principles of Learning Mentoring
- Identifying the barriers to learning
- Removing the barriers to learning
- Setting targets, monitoring progress and providing guidance
- Building up confidence and self esteem
- Liaising with families and staff
- Contributing to a whole school culture of support
- Working with individual caseloads which are reasonable and allow time
The process at Gilesgate Sports College and 6th Form Centre begins by deciding on a cohort of students who the school feel may benefit from personal mentoring.
Which students are mentored?
- C/D borderline students
- Underachieving students
- Students who are working well and need encouragement
- Students with issues that may be affecting their education
- Students who need help to keep them on track
- Any student who feels they would benefit from the mentoring programme
A learning mentor can assist students to:
- Advise on the best way to learn
- Organise work
- Catch up with coursework
- Learn how to raise their attainment
- Manage the pressures of work especially in year 11
- Exam techniques
