Sports Relief
March 2010

On Friday 19th March 2010 students and staff at the Sixth Form Centre joined in the national campaign to raise an amazing £430 in just one day.

As well as a collection people wore their sporting clothes for the day. The sports studies students travelled into the Centre on their bicycles and held a competition to see who could travel the furthest in 45 minutes. Congratulations went to Liam Wintrip and Scott Wallace who came first.

All the money raised by the public is spent by Comic Relief to help transform the lives of poor and vulnerable people,
both at home and across the world’s poorest countries.

NSPCC & Children with Leukaemia
February 2010

The NSPCC is inspired by a belief that we can make a difference for all children – by standing up for their rights, by listening to them, by helping them when they need us and by making them safe.  Their vision is ending cruelty to children in the UK. They believe cruelty is preventable and that through having an inspirational vision they will achieve much greater success for children.

Children with Leukaemia has been helping children affected by leukaemia for more than 22 years It funds research into causes and treatments, support families through welfare programmes and campaign on their behalf.

To support both these charities, in February, we encouraged both staff and students to bring their teddies into the Centre for the day. There was also a children themed quiz at lunch time. As ever the cake sale proved very popular and some fabulous prizes were won in the tombola. An amount of £180 was raised for these very worthwhile causes.

Haiti Earthquake Collection
January 2010

In January 2010 a massive 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti. It is feared thousands of people have died. Despite many students being on student leave an amount of £50 was raised in just a few days when a collection tin was left in the refectory.

Students and staff were so touched and concerned by the disaster that they donated their loose change to help the people of Haiti. The money was sent to the Disasters Emergency Committee.

Christmas Talent Competition
December 2009

The Charity Committee once again had the privilege of arranging an event to say farewell to the end of term and the D Factor was this years result. A wealth of talent from both our students and staff was uncovered. The competition was won by Jack Robinson (who has also auditioned for Britain's got talent) singing Hero. however he faced strong competition form the staff act 'the weakest Link'. Mrs Storey as Ann Robinson and Mr. Miller as Vicki Pollard' will be remembered for some time to come.

The money raised from the sale of the tickets £66 was donated to the Prostate Cancer Charity which is a medical research charity, whose aim is to encourage, support and carry out research into the causes, prevention and treatment of prostate cancer and also research the impact of living with the disease.

Children in need day
November 2009

A very popular day which provided both staff and students with the excuse of coming to the Centre in fancy dress . The Mad Hatter, Men in Black, the Pink Ladies and even a couple of sumo wrestlers joined in the fundraising. Some very brave teachers agreed to be placed in the stocked and were soaked (sometimes by other teachers)  when wet sponges were thrown at them. Students were entertained at lunchtime with a quiz and 2 of our students appeared on television presenting a cheque for  a record breaking £1000 at the local BBC outside broadcast.

Armistice Day (poppy appeal)
November 2009

The 11th day of the 11th month is always Armistice Day (Poppy Day).  The importance of this day is to remember people and the things they did and what they may have experienced. Poppies were sold at the Centre and in the usual mark of respect a 2 minute silence was held at 11 o'clock.

For the first time a quiet room was set to one side so people could  spend a few minutes in contemplation. Visitors to the room made a large poppy with the petals showed their thoughts for the day.

Operation Christmas Child
November 2009

Now a feature of the run up to Christmas once again the students and staff donated shoe boxes to the Samaritans Purse. Last year, through Operation Christmas Child, over 1.2 million shoeboxes packed full of gifts and goodies were wrapped, packed and sent to children in disadvantaged situations by children and adults in the UK.

Boxes were displayed, until collection, in the foyer at the Centre and showed visitors the generosity and spirit of caring that is indicative of our students and staff.

Wear It Pink/Shirt For Sheila Day
November 2009

Whilst the rest of the country raised awareness of breast cancer in October 2009, due to school holidays we decided to  have our event in November when school re-opened after half term. It was felt that this year it was very important to raise funds to show support for Mrs Coyle. Students and staff really joined in the occasion and the day was a tremendous success, raising £363 for the charity.

Breast Cancer Campaign uses all wear it pink donations to fund innovative, world-class research throughout the UK and Ireland to understand how breast cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure. The charity currently supports around 130 projects worth £15million in 43 centres across the UK and Ireland.

Send a Cow
October 2009

The Charity Committee were asked to hold an event on the Flexible Learning day of 23rd October. It was decided to not only raise funds but also awareness of the charity. Students manned an information stand providing details about the charity Send a Cow which each year helps thousands of families in Africa grow enough food to eat, sell their produce and develop small businesses that last.

They provide training, livestock, seeds and ongoing support. They also help families make the most of the land and resources they already have. In addition Health & Social Care students showed off their skills by baking cakes and biscuits to sell. Sufficient money was raised to send a sheep (or at least the money to buy one!)

Jeans For Genes Day
October 2009

Not just a good excuse to wear our jeans to school but also to raise much needed money for the charity Jeans for Genes - who help children and families affected by genetic disorders by funding support services and research into the causes and cures of these conditions. We exceeded last years total and raised £560 when both staff and students wore jeans and donated £1.00 for the pleasure.

Tombola & Cake Stall - Butterwicks Children's Hospice
September 2009

We started our fund raising events in September at the 'Enrichment fayre' for the then new Year 12 students. This was so they would be aware of the work of the Charity Committee and participate in one of or many events. We had a cake stall and a tombola stall.

Both proved extremely popular with students and we raised £100 for the Butterwick House Children's Hospice which provides day, respite and end of life care, family support, complementary therapies and bereavement care to families from Teesside, County Durham, North Yorkshire and Wearside.

Students from the Health & Social care course have been so touched by the work of the Hospice that they are in the process of preparing a cookbook and the sale proceeds will also be donated to this charity.
